A year of pay at each wage

Each row is a year at 40 hours a week: the pay before taxes, then the least and the most any place leaves after them.

Every figure assumes one paycheck every two weeks, single, no dependents, and no benefits taken out, worked out by the same calculator as each state's hourly page. Each wage's own page shows every place's paycheck, month, and year. For your own hours, use the paycheck calculator.

Which places keep the most and the least

Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, and Wyoming keep the most at every wage from $15 to $50 an hour, since none of them takes anything from a paycheck beyond federal tax and FICA. North Dakota ties with them at every wage here from $15 to $28 an hour, where its income tax withholding comes to $0, and falls behind them from $29.

Oregon keeps the least at every wage here from $16 to $50 an hour. At $15, which is under Oregon's $15.55 minimum wage, the least is in Maryland, figured for Baltimore City.

How far apart the states are

The gap between the most and the least kept is $1,956 a year at $15 an hour, $3,722 a year at $25, and $8,488 a year at $50. At $25 an hour, federal income tax and FICA take $8,038 a year in every state, while the state's own taxes and deductions run from $0 to $3,722.

Minimum wages on these pages

Where a wage is below a place's minimum wage, that place's row on the wage page shows its minimum wage in place of take-home figures. Twelve places have a minimum wage above $15 an hour, four above $16, two above $17, and only the District of Columbia above $18. From $19 up, every place has figures.
