What comes out of a New York paycheck
On $1,500 every two weeks, single, a New York worker keeps $1,222.14.
New York taxes income at graduated rates that were cut for 2026. State withholding starts at 3.9 percent and rises with pay, with higher rates for very high earners. Employers use the tables in the state's withholding guide, and the calculator follows those tables.
Form IT-2104 sets your allowances. Unlike most states, New York gives no allowance for you or your spouse. Each dependent adds one allowance, worth for example $19.25 a week in the tables, and a head of household with only one job adds two more. The form offers extra allowances for credits such as the household credit, the Empire State child credit, and the earned income credit. The calculator leaves those out, because they depend on income and credits we do not ask about, so some workers with children may see slightly less withheld than we show.
The state guide's own worked examples are off by a cent in two places where the guide rounds early, and the calculator follows the method's text rather than those examples.
County and local taxes
Two cities add their own tax on top of the state's. New York City residents pay city income tax, withheld using the city's 2026 tables, with rates from 2.05 to 4.25 percent of wages after allowances. The city's rate for bonuses and other supplemental pay is 4.25 percent.
Yonkers residents pay a surcharge equal to 16.75 percent of the New York State tax withheld. People who work in Yonkers but live elsewhere pay a 0.50 percent earnings tax on those wages. The result does not include them, so a paycheck in either city will show less take-home than the figure above. Subtract your city's share.
Disability and paid leave
New York has two employee-paid programs. Disability benefits let an employer take 0.5 percent of wages, but no more than 60 cents a week, and the employer may collect it or not, so your stub may show nothing. The calculator scales the 60 cents to your pay period, which is $1.20 biweekly, $1.30 semimonthly, and $2.60 monthly, and the state's rule for converting it is not spelled out.
Paid Family Leave takes 0.432 percent of gross wages each paycheck, to an annual maximum of $411.91. Together the two programs pay part of your wages while you are out because of illness, injury, or family leave.
Final pay and the minimum wage
New York's minimum wage depends on where you work. It is $16.00 an hour upstate and $17.00 in New York City, Long Island, and Westchester. The calculator uses the rest-of-state $16.00. The tipped cash wage in the calculator is $10.70 an hour.
New York gives one answer for firings and resignations: your final check comes with the next regular payday for the period you last worked.
