Every column after the wage is take-home pay. Each row assumes 40 hours a week all year, one paycheck every two weeks, single, no dependents, and no benefits taken out. The monthly and yearly columns are that paycheck times 26. Use the paycheck calculator for your own hours and deductions.
What comes out of an hourly paycheck
At $25 an hour, a two-week paycheck in Illinois starts at $2,000.00 and ends at $1,597.42.
| Federal income tax | $156.15 |
| Social Security | $124.00 |
| Medicare | $29.00 |
| Illinois income tax | $93.43 |
Illinois takes a flat 4.95 percent of wages after an exemption of $2,925 for each allowance the worker claims. Federal income tax, Social Security, and Medicare come out of the check too. No disability or paid leave deduction applies, and no city or county tax on wages comes out.
A flat rate with one exemption per allowance gives Illinois a clean shape: the tax line grows evenly with pay, and the exemption trims the front of it.
What changes your number
Allowances are the Illinois lever. Form IL-W-4 starts at one for yourself, adds one for a spouse, and adds one per dependent, and each excuses $2,925 of pay from the 4.95 percent tax. Claim more and each check is a little larger.
Past that, the rate does not change with income, so a raise is taxed at 4.95 percent on the state side whatever your wage. Federal tax is the part that bends upward. Overtime and tips are taxed the same way as regular hours.
Hours matter too. At $20 an hour and 30 hours a week instead of 40, a two-week paycheck in Illinois comes to $994.22.
The minimum wage in Illinois
The minimum wage in Illinois is $15.00 an hour, and a full-time worker at $15 takes home about $2,154 a month. Illinois guarantees $15.00 an hour for workers 18 and older, and Chicago and Cook County set higher local minimums that this figure does not cover.

Disability: Illinois runs no state disability or paid-family-leave insurance program funded by an employee payroll deduction. Its Paid Leave for All Workers Act (820 ILCS 192) requires employers to let workers earn up to 40 hours of paid leave a year, paid by the employer at the worker's regular hourly rate (Illinois Department of Labor, "Paid Leave for All Workers Act" and its FAQ, labor.illinois.gov/laws-rules/paidleave.html and labor.illinois.gov/faqs/paidleavefaq.html, saved under data/sources/illinois/, read Oct 29, 2026: "employees should receive their regular hourly rate for their paid leave time").
Local taxes: Illinois Constitution, Article VII, Section 6(e) (ilga.gov/commission/lrb/con7.htm, saved as data/sources/illinois/ilga-constitution-article-vii.html, read Oct 29, 2026): "A home rule unit shall have only the power that the General Assembly may provide by law ... to license for revenue or impose taxes upon or measured by income or earnings or upon occupations." Illinois cities and counties therefore cannot levy a local income or wage tax unless a state law grants that power, and none was found; IL-700-T (2026) and Form IL-W-4 describe Illinois Income Tax withholding only, with no local withholding.
Minimum wage: Illinois Department of Labor, "Minimum Wage Law" (labor.illinois.gov/laws-rules/fls/minimum-wage-law.html, saved as data/sources/illinois/idol-minimum-wage-law.html, read Oct 29, 2026): "Guarantees a minimum wage of $15.00 per hour for workers 18 years of age and older," tipped $9, youth under 18 working under 650 hours a year $13. Minimum Wage Law, 820 ILCS 105/4(a)(1) (saved as data/sources/illinois/ilga-820-ilcs-105-minimum-wage-law.html): "on and after January 1, 2025 ... not less than $15 per hour"; the statute schedules no later increase, so no change is set for 2027. Chicago and Cook County set their own higher local minimums, which this state figure does not cover.
