Every column after the wage is take-home pay. Each row assumes 40 hours a week all year, one paycheck every two weeks, single, no dependents, and no benefits taken out. The monthly and yearly columns are that paycheck times 26. Use the paycheck calculator for your own hours and deductions.

What comes out of an hourly paycheck

At $25 an hour, a two-week paycheck in Louisiana starts at $2,000.00 and ends at $1,644.35.

Federal income tax$156.15
Social Security$124.00
Medicare$29.00
Louisiana income tax$46.50

Louisiana taxes income at a flat 3 percent, but employers withhold 3.09 percent of wages above a standard deduction of $12,875 a year for a single worker ($25,750 married or head of household). Louisiana adds no disability or leave premium, and no parish or city takes a share of wages. Federal income tax, Social Security, and Medicare are the only other lines.

That makes the state line one of the lighter ones, because the large standard deduction removes much of a low wage from the tax.

What changes your number

The Louisiana standard deduction is the story. Because $12,875 of a single worker's pay is excused, the state line starts small and grows steadily once the wage clears it. After that point every extra dollar is withheld at 3.09 percent.

Form L-4 decides how much is excused. An employer with no L-4 on file withholds with no standard deduction, so a worker who has not turned one in sees a larger state line than the table shows.

Hours matter too. At $20 an hour and 30 hours a week instead of 40, a two-week paycheck in Louisiana comes to $1,026.27.

The minimum wage in Louisiana

The minimum wage in Louisiana is $7.25 an hour, and a full-time worker at $7.25 takes home about $1,155 a month. Louisiana has no state minimum wage law, so the federal rate covers workers whose employers fall under federal law, and a state statute bars parishes and cities from setting a local one.
