Every column after the wage is take-home pay. Each row assumes 40 hours a week all year, one paycheck every two weeks, single, no dependents, and no benefits taken out. The monthly and yearly columns are that paycheck times 26. Use the paycheck calculator for your own hours and deductions.

What comes out of an hourly paycheck

At $25 an hour, a two-week paycheck in North Dakota starts at $2,000.00 and ends at $1,690.85.

Federal income tax$156.15
Social Security$124.00
Medicare$29.00
North Dakota income tax$0.00

North Dakota taxes wages at 1.95 percent and 2.5 percent, with a large first slice of income taxed at zero, so many workers have little or no North Dakota tax withheld. Federal income tax, Social Security, and Medicare still come out in full. North Dakota adds no disability or leave premium and no local wage tax.

In the lower rows of this table the North Dakota line reads $0.00, and it appears only in the higher ones.

What changes your number

North Dakota's untaxed first slice is the whole story. Below the point where pay crosses it, the state takes nothing, so the first several rows of the table match a state with no income tax. Above it, the line begins small and grows slowly at 1.95 percent.

The state uses only the filing status from your federal W-4. Dependents and other entries do not change what North Dakota withholds, and a new hire with no W-4 is treated as single. Pay before tax can keep a worker under the untaxed slice longer.

Hours matter too. At $20 an hour and 30 hours a week instead of 40, a two-week paycheck in North Dakota comes to $1,048.05.

The minimum wage in North Dakota

The minimum wage in North Dakota is $7.25 an hour, and a full-time worker at $7.25 takes home about $1,161 a month. It has held since July 24, 2009, and the tip credit is 33 percent of the minimum wage.

Sources and checks

Checked on Oct 29, 2026. Disability: North Dakota has no state disability or paid-family-leave insurance program funded by a worker payroll deduction: no North Dakota statute creates one, and the 2026 withholding booklet and the Department of Labor and Human Rights site (nd.gov/labor, checked Oct 29, 2026) mention none.

Local taxes: N.D.C.C. 40-05.1-06(5) (ndlegis.gov, saved as data/sources/north-dakota/ndcc-t40c05-1.pdf, read Oct 29, 2026) lists the taxes a home rule city may levy: 'excises, fees, charges, franchise and license taxes, sales and use taxes, farm machinery gross receipts taxes, alcoholic beverage gross receipts taxes, a city lodging tax, and a city restaurant tax', and adds that 'Ordinances enacted after August 1, 2017, may not allow for the collection and levy of any tax not otherwise specified under this section.' No income or wage tax is on the list. The county home rule chapter, N.D.C.C. 11-09.1 (saved as data/sources/north-dakota/ndcc-t11c09-1.pdf), likewise lists no income tax. The 2026 withholding booklet covers state withholding only.

Minimum wage: N.D.C.C. 34-06-22(1)(c) (ndlegis.gov, saved as data/sources/north-dakota/ndcc-t34c06.pdf, read Oct 29, 2026): 'Effective July 24, 2009, a wage of at least seven dollars and twenty-five cents per hour.' No change is scheduled. Tipped wage: N.D. Admin. Code 46-02-07-03(1) (saved as data/sources/north-dakota/ndac-46-02-07.pdf): 'A tip credit of thirty-three percent of the minimum wage may be allowed for tipped employees,' so the lowest cash wage is $7.25 less 33 percent ($2.3925), which is $4.86 when rounded up to the next cent (computed here; the rule states the percentage, not the dollar figure).
