Every column after the wage is take-home pay. Each row assumes 40 hours a week all year, one paycheck every two weeks, single, no dependents, and no benefits taken out. The monthly and yearly columns are that paycheck times 26. Use the paycheck calculator for your own hours and deductions.

West Virginia's city service fees are not in these figures. Charleston charges $3.00 a week to people who work in the city, other cities set their own amounts, and the calculator does not include them. See West Virginia's local tax rules, or try the paycheck calculator.

What comes out of an hourly paycheck

At $25 an hour, a two-week paycheck in West Virginia starts at $2,000.00 and ends at $1,625.85.

Federal income tax$156.15
Social Security$124.00
Medicare$29.00
West Virginia income tax$65.00

West Virginia taxes wages at 2.11 to 4.58 percent after a $2,000 exemption for the worker and each person they claim, and 2026 rates were cut 5 percent mid-year, back to January 1. Federal withholding, Social Security, and Medicare apply as usual, and no state disability or leave premium is added.

No city or county levies an income tax, but several charge a flat weekly fee that employers withhold from the pay of people who work in the city.

What changes your number

Exemptions decide most of the West Virginia difference. Form IT-104 counts one for the worker, two for a married worker, and one for each dependent, and each takes $2,000 off the pay that the state taxes. Because the mid-year cut reaches back to January 1, the amount withheld can differ from the final tax, and the return settles it.

City fees are the part that surprises workers. Charleston's is $3.00 a week, other cities set their own amounts, and none of them is in the figures on this page. A flat weekly amount hurts a small check more than a large one.

Hours matter too. At $20 an hour and 30 hours a week instead of 40, a two-week paycheck in West Virginia comes to $1,017.05.

The minimum wage in West Virginia

The minimum wage in West Virginia is $8.75 an hour, and a full-time worker at $8.75 takes home about $1,351 a month. West Virginia's law has set $8.75 since the end of 2015, an employer may take a 70 percent tip credit for service employees, and the law covers employers with six or more non-exempt employees.

Disability: West Virginia has no state disability or paid-family-leave insurance program funded by a worker payroll deduction: no West Virginia statute creates one, and neither the Tax Division's withholding instructions nor the Division of Labor site (labor.wv.gov, checked Oct 29, 2026) mention one.

Local taxes: City of Charleston, City Service Fee overview (revised 12/2022, saved as data/sources/west-virginia/charleston-city-service-fee-overview-2022-12.pdf, read Oct 29, 2026): 'The City of Charleston imposes a three dollar ($3.00) per week City Service Fee ("CSF") upon all' persons working in the city, and employers 'withhold $3.00 per week from their employees' pay.' The West Virginia Tax Division's withholding instructions (IT-100.2A and the Withholding Help page) describe state income tax withholding only.

Minimum wage: W. Va. Code section 21-5C-2(a)(5) (code.wvlegislature.gov, saved as data/sources/west-virginia/wvcode-21-5C-2.html, read Oct 29, 2026): 'After December 31, 2015, every employer shall pay to each of his or her employees wages at a rate not less than $8.75 per hour.' West Virginia Division of Labor, Minimum Wage FAQ (labor.wv.gov, saved as data/sources/west-virginia/wvdol-minimum-wage-faq.html): employers get 'a 70% credit against the minimum wage requirement for their service employees that receive tips. That means an employer may pay his or her tipped employees a cash wage of $2.62 per hour'; the state law covers employers with 'at least six or more non-exempt employees working at any one separate, distinct and permanent work location' (others follow the federal $7.25 where federal law applies). No change is scheduled.
