Every column after the wage is take-home pay. Each row assumes 40 hours a week all year, one paycheck every two weeks, single, no dependents, and no benefits taken out. The monthly and yearly columns are that paycheck times 26. Use the paycheck calculator for your own hours and deductions.
Michigan's city income taxes are not in these figures. Twenty-four cities tax income, including Detroit, Grand Rapids, Saginaw, Flint, Lansing, and Pontiac, and their withholding depends on whether you live or work there. See Michigan's local tax rules, or try the paycheck calculator.
What comes out of an hourly paycheck
At $25 an hour, a two-week paycheck in Michigan starts at $2,000.00 and ends at $1,615.49.
| Federal income tax | $156.15 |
| Social Security | $124.00 |
| Medicare | $29.00 |
| Michigan income tax | $75.36 |
Michigan taxes wages at one flat rate, 4.25 percent. For 2026, each personal and dependent exemption takes $5,900 a year off the wages that are taxed. Federal income tax, Social Security, and Medicare also come out, and Michigan runs no state disability or leave program.
Cities are where Michigan differs: twenty-four of them tax income, and an employer in one of those cities withholds the city tax from pay.
What changes your number
Where you live and work can add a second tax in Michigan. Detroit charges 2.4 percent for residents and 1.2 percent for people who live elsewhere but work there. Grand Rapids and Saginaw charge 1.5 percent and 0.75 percent, and most of the other cities charge 1 percent and 0.5 percent.
The state side is easy to follow. A flat 4.25 percent means the state tax rises in step with the wage, and the $5,900 exemption trims the front of it. City exemptions are small: Detroit allows $600 a year per person, and the other cities set their own.
Hours matter too. At $20 an hour and 30 hours a week instead of 40, a two-week paycheck in Michigan comes to $1,006.69.
The minimum wage in Michigan
The minimum wage in Michigan is $13.73 an hour, and a full-time worker at $13.73 takes home about $2,014 a month. It rises to $15.00 on Jan 1, 2027. The rise to $15.00 comes from the 2025 Senate Bill 8 amendment to the 2018 wage act.
