What comes out of a Michigan paycheck

On $1,500 every two weeks, single, a Michigan worker keeps $1,234.99.

Michigan taxes wages at a flat 4.25 percent. For 2026, each exemption takes $5,900 a year off the wages that are taxed. Form MI-W4 has no filing status. A single worker claims one exemption, a married worker claims two when the spouse does not claim their own with another employer, and every dependent adds one.

Each dependent therefore lowers yearly withholding by $250.75, spread across your paychecks, until withholding reaches zero. There is no federal tax subtraction, and no brackets exist, so the flat rate is also the top rate.

Michigan has reciprocal agreements with Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin. A resident of one of those states who works in Michigan has no Michigan tax withheld, though the calculator assumes you live in Michigan. Treasury's guide gives no rounding rule and no sample paycheck, so a payroll system that rounds the per-period exemption first can differ by a cent. City income taxes are separate and are not in this figure.

County and local taxes

Twenty-four Michigan cities tax income, and employers in those cities withhold it from pay. Detroit charges 2.4 percent to residents and 1.2 percent to people who live elsewhere but work there. Grand Rapids and Saginaw charge 1.5 percent to residents and 0.75 percent to nonresidents, and Highland Park charges 2 percent and 1 percent.

Twenty more cities charge 1 percent to residents and 0.5 percent to nonresidents: Albion, Battle Creek, Benton Harbor, Big Rapids, East Lansing, Flint, Grayling, Hamtramck, Hudson, Ionia, Jackson, Lansing, Lapeer, Muskegon, Muskegon Heights, Pontiac, Port Huron, Portland, Springfield, and Walker. Each city also allows its own small exemption per person, and Detroit's is $600 a year.

Only Detroit, Grand Rapids, and Saginaw were confirmed against a source of their own. The other cities' rates come from a table published by the City of Grand Rapids, so check your own city's rate. The result does not include city tax, so add it if you work or live in one of these cities.

Final pay and the minimum wage

Michigan workers are owed $13.73 an hour now, and $15.00 an hour once January 1, 2027 arrives. A tipped worker's cash wage is $5.49 an hour.

If you are let go, your wages are due right away, as soon as your employer can work out the amount. In practice that means no later than the regular payday for the pay period in which you were let go. If you quit, the rule is the same, and the deadline is the regular payday for the pay period in which you left.
