What comes out of a New Jersey paycheck

On $1,500 every two weeks, single, a New Jersey worker keeps $1,248.91.

New Jersey taxes income at graduated rates from 1.4 to 10.75 percent, but employers withhold using percentage tables that run from 1.5 to 11.8 percent. Those tables are dated October 1, 2020, and the state's September 2025 employer guide still points to them. We found no newer table, so the calculator uses these.

Your status on Form NJ-W4 picks the table. Single workers use Rate A, and married or head of household workers use Rate B. Each allowance subtracts $1,000 a year, or $19.20 a week, before the table applies, and you claim one for yourself, one for a spouse, and one for each dependent. Dependents therefore change the amount taxed but not the table.

Three of the guide's six weekly examples print older bracket figures than the tables, and results differ by one to two cents. The calculator follows the tables. A worker contribution to unemployment and workforce funds is a separate deduction, covered next.

County and local taxes

No New Jersey city or county taxes wages through the paycheck. State law lets a municipality charge employers a payroll tax of up to 1 percent of payroll, but the ordinance must forbid employers from deducting it from employees' pay. The tax exists on the employer's side only, so it never reduces your check.

Which cities charge it is not listed here, because it never touches a paycheck, and nothing local needs adding to your result.

On the worker side, New Jersey also takes a 0.425 percent contribution for unemployment and workforce funds on the first $44,800 of wages. That deduction is separate from disability and family leave, and the calculator shows it as its own line.

Disability and paid leave

New Jersey takes 0.19 percent for Temporary Disability Insurance and 0.23 percent for Family Leave Insurance in 2026, both on the first $171,100 of wages. These are the worker's shares. The 2027 wage base for both is $177,100. Temporary disability pays part of your wages when illness or injury keeps you off the job, and family leave pays while you bond with a new child or care for a seriously ill relative.

Final pay and the minimum wage

The New Jersey minimum is $15.92 an hour this year, then $16.48 from January 1, 2027. The tipped cash wage is $6.05 an hour for 2026. One state labor page describes a $6.61 cash wage as effective January 1, 2026, while the press release and the tipped workers page put $6.61 in 2027, so check your posted notice if your rate looks different.

Whether the job ends by firing or resignation, the deadline is the regular payday for the pay period in which it ended.
