Every column after the wage is take-home pay. Each row assumes 40 hours a week all year, one paycheck every two weeks, single, no dependents, and no benefits taken out. The monthly and yearly columns are that paycheck times 26. Use the paycheck calculator for your own hours and deductions.
What comes out of an hourly paycheck
At $25 an hour, a two-week paycheck in New Jersey starts at $2,000.00 and ends at $1,617.11.
| Federal income tax | $156.15 |
| Social Security | $124.00 |
| Medicare | $29.00 |
| New Jersey income tax | $56.84 |
| New Jersey Temporary Disability Insurance | $3.80 |
| New Jersey Family Leave Insurance | $4.60 |
| New Jersey worker unemployment and workforce contribution (UI/WF/SWF) | $8.50 |
New Jersey taxes income at graduated rates from 1.4 to 10.75 percent, and employers withhold using the state's percentage tables, which run from 1.5 to 11.8 percent. Three smaller state lines follow. Temporary disability takes 0.19 percent and family leave takes 0.23 percent, both on the first $171,100 of wages in 2026. A third line takes 0.425 percent for unemployment and workforce funds on the first $44,800. Federal income tax, Social Security, and Medicare come out beyond the four.
That makes four state lines on one New Jersey check, and no city or county adds a fifth.
What changes your number
The unemployment and workforce line is the surprise. It is a flat 0.425 percent of the first $44,800 of wages, so it stops partway through the year for a worker paid more than that, and the higher rows of the table pay it for only part of the year. The disability and family leave lines run to $171,100.
The graduated income tax is the larger mover, since each step up the table meets a higher withholding rate. Form NJ-W4 allowances for yourself, a spouse, and dependents lower the tax. Overtime and tips raise the check like regular pay.
Hours matter too. At $20 an hour and 30 hours a week instead of 40, a two-week paycheck in New Jersey comes to $1,018.06.
