What comes out of an hourly paycheck
At $25 an hour, a two-week paycheck in Virginia starts at $2,000.00 and ends at $1,607.16.

Virginia taxes wages from 2 percent on the first $3,000 of taxable income up to 5.75 percent over $17,000, after an $8,750 standard deduction and $930 for each exemption. Federal income tax, Social Security, and Medicare are the other deductions. Virginia runs no disability or paid leave program, and its cities and counties levy no wage tax.
The top rate arrives at a low income, so most of the Virginia line is 5.75 percent of whatever is left after the deduction.
What changes your number
Virginia's top rate starts at just $17,000 of taxable income, so almost every dollar of an hourly wage above the standard deduction meets 5.75 percent. A raise is taxed at 5.75 percent for nearly every row.
Exemptions are the lever. Form VA-4 lets you claim one for yourself, one for a married spouse, and one for each dependent, and each takes $930 off.
Hours matter too. At $20 an hour and 30 hours a week instead of 40, a two-week paycheck in Virginia comes to $1,010.36.
