What comes out of a Virginia paycheck

On $1,500 every two weeks, single, a Virginia worker keeps $1,234.18.

Virginia taxes wages from 2 percent on the first $3,000 of taxable income up to 5.75 percent on income over $17,000, with 3 percent and 5 percent rates in between. Before those rates apply, the formula subtracts an $8,750 standard deduction and $930 for each exemption.

Form VA-4 has no filing status. You claim one exemption for yourself, one for a spouse who is not claimed on their own certificate, and one for each dependent, and each dependent lowers annual Virginia withholding by up to $53.48 at the 5.75 percent rate. The $8,750 figure is the single standard deduction, used for everyone because each spouse files their own VA-4. The employer's guide notes that the higher standard deduction ($8,750 single, $17,500 married filing jointly) is scheduled to sunset after tax year 2026 and revert to $3,000 and $6,000, so the 2027 formula will likely change.

A worker who files no VA-4 is withheld as if they had no exemptions, and bonuses may be withheld at a flat 5.75 percent. The guide's own example rounds the annual tax to the whole dollar before dividing, and the calculator does the same, so a stub can differ by a few cents. Virginia does not subtract federal tax. Paid family and medical leave contributions begin April 1, 2028, so none come out of a 2026 check.

County and local taxes

Virginia sets income aside for the state alone. Under Section 58.1-300 of the Code of Virginia, no county, city, town, or other political subdivision may impose any tax or levy upon incomes.

The state's income tax is therefore the only one on a Virginia pay stub, and the result needs no local amount added.

Final pay and the minimum wage

Virginia's minimum wage is $12.77 an hour in 2026 and rises to $13.75 on January 1, 2027. The $2.13 tipped cash wage is the federal figure, because Virginia lets employers count tips toward the wage but sets no state cash minimum.

Your last check is due no later than the day you would have been paid for that work had the job not ended, the next regular payday, and quitting does not change that.
