Indiana pay rules at a glance

State income taxFlat rate Source
County or local taxAll 92 Indiana counties levy a county income tax, withheld by the employer alongside state tax on the same taxable wages. The rate is set by the county where the worker lived on January 1 of the year; someone who lived outside Indiana on January 1 pays the rate of the Indiana county where they mainly worked that day. A move during the year does not change the county until the next January 1. For pay periods beginning on or after October 1, 2026, county rates run from 0.5 percent (Porter County) to 3.0 percent (Randolph County); Marion County (Indianapolis) is 2.02 percent. What comes out of a Indiana paycheck

On $1,500 every two weeks, single, an Indiana worker in Marion County keeps $1,216.46.

Indiana withholds two taxes from one number. The state rate is a flat 2.95 percent for 2026, and your county adds its own income tax on the same taxable wages. Because the two share one taxable amount, the calculator asks for your county before it shows a result.

Form WH-4 sets the exemptions. You claim $1,000 a year for yourself, another $1,000 for a spouse when married, and for each dependent both a $1,000 personal exemption and an additional $1,500 exemption. A dependent therefore takes $2,500 a year off your taxable wages, worth $73.75 a year in state tax at 2.95 percent, plus the county share.

The form has no filing status. Indiana does not subtract federal tax. Nonresidents who expect to work 30 days or fewer in Indiana may be exempt from withholding. One extra exemption, $1,500 for a child claimed for the first time, is not included in the calculator. County rates can change each January 1 and October 1, and the figures here are the ones in effect from October 1, 2026.

County and local taxes

All 92 Indiana counties levy a county income tax, withheld by your employer alongside the state tax. The rate is set by the county where you lived on January 1 of the year. Someone who lived outside Indiana on that date pays the rate of the Indiana county where they mainly worked that day. A move during the year does not change your county until the next January 1.

For pay periods beginning on or after October 1, 2026, county rates run from 0.5 percent in Porter County to 3.0 percent in Randolph County. Marion County, which includes Indianapolis, is 2.02 percent.

Indiana has no separate city wage tax today. A 2025 state law is reported to let cities and towns adopt their own income tax from 2028, but no official source we read confirms it, and it does not affect 2026 withholding. The calculator includes your county's tax in the result, so nothing needs adding for a city.

Final pay and the minimum wage

The minimum wage here is $7.25, with a $2.13 cash wage for tipped jobs, plus tips.

No matter who ends the job, your employer must pay you by the next regularly scheduled payday on which you would have been paid had you stayed employed. We took this rule from the state labor department's answer, because the Indiana Code itself was not available to us when we checked.

Local taxes: Indiana Department of Revenue, Departmental Notice #1 (R47 / 10-26, effective Oct. 1, 2026; in.gov/dor/files/dn01.pdf, read Oct 29, 2026), page 1 (county of residence or principal employment as of Jan. 1 sets the rate) and page 5 (the rate for each of the 92 counties); Form WH-4 (State Form 48845, R10 / 8-23), instructions ("If you move to (or work in) another county after January 1, your county status will not change until the next calendar year"). The notice and the WH-4 provide for county tax only; no city-level wage tax appears in either.

Disability and paid leave: Indiana runs no state disability or paid family leave payroll program, and its one state payroll insurance, unemployment, is paid by the employer alone: "Premiums are paid by the employer without deduction from the wages of an employee" and "Employers are not allowed to deduct UI premiums and reimbursements from employee wages" (Indiana Department of Workforce Development, Unemployment Insurance Employer Handbook, revised 07/01/2025, pages 8 and 97; in.gov/dwd/files/Employer_Handbook.pdf, read Oct 29, 2026). Departmental Notice #1 lists state and county income tax as the only Indiana withholdings it governs.

Minimum wage: Indiana Department of Labor, "Indiana Minimum Wage Law" poster (in.gov/dol/files/updated-pdfs-4-7-2026/Indiana2009MinimumWage.pdf, file updated Apr 7, 2026, read Oct 29, 2026): "$7.25 per hour," in effect since July 24, 2009; tipped employees "at least $2.13 per hour if the employer claims a tip credit." No later change is announced there.

(faqs.in.gov/hc/en-us/articles/115005044367, read Oct 29, 2026): "Final wages must be paid on or before the next regularly scheduled payday on which the employee would have been normally paid had the employee remained employed." The same rule applies whether the worker quit or was let go.
